Chevrel – PbMo₆S₈

The Mo₆S₈ unit can be considered as an octahedron of Mo atoms in a cube of S atoms.

The Chevrel phase shows that in the 3D solid Mo₆S₈ clusters are tilted relative to each other. This allows for interactions between vacant Mo d_z² and a filled orbital on S. PbMo₆S₈ is a superconductor.
