Interaction of Bromine Br2 and C=O on Propanone

Interaction of Br2 with the carbonyl group of propanone.

The interaction of Br2 with the carbonyl group of propanone.

(a) Structure of (CH3)2COBr2 determined by X-ray diffraction. Bond lengths given in pm. Bond distances can be measured by double clicking the two atoms of interest. Bond angles are measured by double clicking an atom, then single clicking the atom at the vertex, then double clicking the final atom.

(b) The orbital overlap responsible for complex formation.

(c) A partial molecular orbital energy level diagram for the σ‎ and σ‎* orbitals of Br2 with appropriate combinations of the sp2 orbitals on the two O atoms. The charge-transfer transition is labelled CT.
