The Mo6S8 unit can be considered as an octahedron of Mo atoms in a cube of S atoms.

The Chevrel phase shows that in the 3D solid Mo6S8 clusters are tilted relative to each other. This allows for interactions between vacant Mo dz2 and a filled orbital on S. PbMo6S8 is a superconductor.
