Grotthus mechanism of proton conduction

Grotthus mechanism
The Grotthus mechanism. In solutions of H+ ions, charge is not conducted by a single ion moving through solution. Hydrogen ion transfer takes place between adjacent, hydrogen bonded, water molecules so that the conduction is faster than expected. (The blue curved arrows indicate movement of H+—not movement of electron pairs.)
