Formation of bromoform

The tribromomethyl anion removes a proton from the carboxylic acid group yielding bromoform (tribromomethane) and the carboxylate.These are the final products of a base-mediated bromination of a methyl ketone. Iodine produces iodoform (triiodomethane) in just the same way.
