Possible morphologies of Au Nanoparticles – Truncated octahedron

Compare the idealised polyhedron structure with the structures calculated for various numbers of gold atoms by Density Functional Theory.




As its name implies, the shape can be truncated from the octahedron. Further truncated structures could be cuboctahedron and cubo-truncated rhombic dodecahedron. Here, the Au116 could be a middle structure between the truncated octahedron and cuboctahedron.

The structures were obtained from the literature (A. S. Barnard, Accounts of Chemical Research, 2012, 45, 1688-1697).
