YBa2Cu3O7 is a superconductor. The structure is similar to perovskite but with oxygen atoms missing. The unit cell consists of three simple perovskite cubes vertically stacked with Y and Ba in the ‘A’ sites and Cu in the ‘B’ sites of an ABO3 perovskite. However the copper is not surrounded by an octahedron of oxygen. Instead some copper have 5 oxygen neighbours in a square-pyramidal arrangement whilst others have 4 oxygen neighbours in a square formation.
