Retro-Ene reaction Decomposition of 1-pentene

Click the structures and arrows to view the 3D models and animations respectively

This is an example of an retro-ene reaction, showing the decomposition of 1-pentene to ethylene and 1-propene. The proposed mechanism for this reaction is the transfer of one hydrogen atom from the methyl end of pentene, to the opposite methylene carbon. This is followed by the simultaneous breaking of a C-C single bond leading to the formation of two products.
