Possible morphologies of Au Nanoparticles – Decahedron

Compare the idealised polyhedron structure with the structures calculated for various numbers of gold atoms by Density Functional Theory.

The decahedron becomes thermodynamically preferred when a large size of nanoparticles is adopted. This is the second most frequently observed structure.

With repect to thiol-protected gold cluster, thus far, only one example of an Au-thiolate cluster has been determined (Au102(p-MBA)44).

The structures were obtained from the literature (A. S. Barnard, Accounts of Chemical Research, 2012, 45, 1688-1697).
