Firstly the isopropyllithium and the Boc-pyrrolidine come together to form a complex with (–)-sparteine. Due to the asymmetric nature of sparteine, the Hs hydrogen is in a position where it is removed by the isopropyllithium, giving the enanteospecific alkyllithium.
